MA discussed his career journey at La Caisse, including his transition from an investment associate role into private equity and the factors that motivated his interest in the asset class. He also shared key career advice that shaped his professional growth and highlighted the technical expertise, relationship-building, and communication skills young professionals need to succeed in private equity.

Institutional CONNECT: Can you tell us a bit about your role at La Caisse?
Marc-Antoine Vézina-Tardif: At La Caisse, I serve as a Director within the Private Investment Funds group, where I focus on Private Equity investing. I manage relationships with private equity fund managers globally, evaluate new fund opportunities, and support the development and execution of our Private Equity deployment and strategic partnerships efforts.
Institutional CONNECT: Beginning your career at La Caisse as an analyst, what drew you toward pursuing opportunities in private equity?
Marc-Antoine Vézina-Tardif: Starting as an analyst, I was drawn to private equity for its combination of high‑impact governance and the global, highly specialized nature of the industry. As a funds investor, what reinforced my interest was the relationship‑building and partnership‑driven culture at La Caisse, learning from exceptional people and managers across markets.
Institutional CONNECT: What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received, and how did it shape your approach?

Marc-Antoine Vézina-Tardif: Early in my career, I learned that success isn’t just about doing great work, it’s about meeting evolving expectations. Priorities can shift quickly, so I make it a habit to clarify goals upfront and check in often as a project develops. Aiming to set at least one interim check‑in for meaningful deliverables can align expectations early and demonstrates proactivity. Managing expectations proactively isn’t just efficient, it shapes how your work is perceived and builds stronger professional relationships.

Institutional CONNECT: For young professionals aspiring to enter private equity, which technical and soft skills do you believe are most critical for success?

Marc-Antoine Vézina-Tardif: Core technical skills will continue to evolve as AI tools become more advanced, but strong financial foundations – valuation, modeling, and corporate strategy concepts – will always matter. In a data‑rich environment like private equity, becoming a skilled user of analytical and efficiency tools is essential, and critical thinking plays an increasingly crucial role in delivering true value‑added work.

Soft skills are equally essential: asking questions, showing intellectual curiosity, and following through with discipline and attention to detail. Professionals who progress tend to pair ambition with the humility to learn from others, seek feedback, and build broad, diverse networks. They collaborate, value different perspectives, and understand the strength of collective thinking. Good investors embrace challenges, while great managers pair that with adaptability and accountability.
