Jerry Olynuk brings a rare combination to portfolio management: three decades of investment experience built on a foundation in Estate & Trust law. That legal training shapes how he thinks about every client relationship, every portfolio decision, and every client structure. Investments do not exist in isolation. They sit inside trusts, holding companies, and family structures where the legal framework determines what is optimal and what is efficient. Jerry understands both sides of that equation.
As Managing Director and Portfolio Manager, Jerry leads Northland’s Calgary office and serves on the firm’s Investment Committee, where he focuses on the analysis and integration of global investments across client portfolios. His work spans asset mix strategy, global portfolio construction, and the design of customised investment solutions that account for each family’s corporate structure, tax position, and succession plan.
Jerry began his career in 1990 in the trust industry, applying his legal background to the planning, administration, and ongoing management of complex estate and trust situations. In 1997, he moved exclusively into portfolio management with the private client division of a major Canadian trust company. He later joined one of Canada’s oldest independent investment counselling firms as Vice-President and Portfolio Manager, where he served on the asset mix committee and deepened his work in independent investment analysis.
In 2007, Jerry took on a broader leadership role as Vice-President, Portfolio Manager, and Chief Compliance Officer at a private investment firm. There he managed balanced and bond portfolios, provided oversight of the firm’s investment funds, chaired the asset mix committee, and carried out original research in global portfolio construction and customised solutions for private and institutional clients. That experience across investment management, compliance, and firm operations prepared him well for the multi-disciplinary demands of a family office.
Jerry is a sought-after speaker at leading family office and investment conferences across North America. His recent engagements include:
Opal Family Office & Private Wealth West (Napa, California): Keynote discussion on Global Macro and Geopolitical Trends and Their Implications for Family Portfolios.
Markets Group 9th Annual Real Estate Canada Forum (Toronto, Ontario): Panelist on A Closer Look at Private Wealth
Pension Bridge Alternatives (New York, New York): Panelist on Will Previously Unloved Energy Continue to Drive Portfolio Performance?
Jerry earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Saskatchewan and holds the Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Partners, Directors & Senior Officers (PDO) Trust Officer and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designations. He volunteers his time within the Calgary arts community, charitable organisations, and with his wife Debbie, is a member of the Japan Society.
